The right methods: There are many different teaching styles and techniques, and most of them will have an important role to play somewhere in your language learning journey. There is no single “right” method. But the way you START learning Bangla is critical, and can have far reaching consequences (positive and/or negative).
At the right times: The way we learned our first language (as a child) acts as a model for the most effective ways to progress in learning a second language (as an adult). At different stages of our development, we need different approaches to elevate us to the next level.

Some are quite good. Others get mixed reviews. Melissa (USA) first came to Bangladesh in 1999, spent a year with a local family to learn Bangla, then lived several years outside the capital. Over the past 25+ years, she has walked alongside many foreigners who want to connect with Bangladeshis at a deeper level by learning their language well. Observing their journeys motivated her to compile the Listening Phase material for Korean, English, Spanish and Chinese speakers. Her own Bangla learning included a large variety of methods, teachers, tutors, classrooms, and time spent with neighbors, and she believes that all of these approaches have their place and their time to benefit the learner. As a language consultant, she will ask you questions, try to understand your goals, share with you about the different approaches and options, and connect you with Bangladeshi teachers, tutors and materials that will help you reach your goals at each stage of the journey. She hasn't stopped learning Bangla herself, and is always exploring different resources to help foreigners learn Bangla.
